PUPPY
Puppy Kindergarten (For ages 10 weeks to 6 months) Puppy Kindergarten is a 6 week class designed to introduce you and your puppy to some basic skills (sit, down, stay, come when called, walking nicely on leash). We will also provide ways of dealing with the “7 Deadly Sins of Puppyhood”: barking, biting, chewing, digging, potty training, jumping and running away! We emphasize socialization to people and other dogs. Treats are used as a gentle lure/reward method to teach your puppy that training is fun. NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES. You will need a 4’ or 6’ lead with fabric or leather buckle collar.

OBEDIENCE
Beginner Obedience (For ages 6 months and older) The goal of this 8 week class is to get basic control over your dog. You will learn to teach your dog obedience commands of heel, sit, down, stay, come and finish. It also addresses bad behaviors such as barking, jumping on people, etc. Along with these basics, you learn how dogs manipulate owners and how to stop it. Handlers must be at least 14 years old.

Intermediate Obedience (Beginner Obedience prerequisite) This 8 week class follows a completed Beginner Obedience Class. The goal of this class is to gain off-lead control. New exercises are taught and the Beginner Class exercises are polished. Dogs learn to come when called from greater distances and stays are done while the handlers are out of sight.

Novice Obedience/Novice Polish (Intermediate Obedience prerequisite) Novice Obedience/Polish is a continuation of off lead control. Proofing of all exercises is done to teach the dog to respond correctly regardless of what is going on around him/her. It is from this class that many handlers start their competitive careers.

Open

Introduction to the dumbbell, forced retrieve, drop on recall, retrieve on flat, retrieve over the high jump, broad jump, three minute long sit and the five minute long down with the handler out of sight. The dogs must have a CD to join and the instructor prefers that the dog have been enrolled in the Novice Polish class previously to determine the skill level of the dog and handler. However, an evaluation appointment can be arranged to assess the level of the dog.

Utility
Instruction from beginning utility work, including signal exercise, scent discrimination, directed retrieve, moving stand, and directed jumping. The dog must have a CDX to join. If the dog has not previously been enrolled in an Open Class at PetsWest, the dog and handler must be evaluated by the instructor to determine their skill level.

Rally Obedience (Beginner Obedience prerequisite) Rally is a new AKC (American Kennel Club) event where the dog and handler move continuously through a course of designed stations. At each station there is a sign that asks for a required skill to be performed such as, “Halt, Sit Down”, “About Turn Right”, “Fast”, etc. Rally provides the link from the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) to Obedience or Agility. The handler is allowed to encourage the dog all the way through the course. The first level is Novice and the dog is on lead at all times. Rally does not require the same degree of precision that is required in obedience.

Beginner Agility (ages 6 months or older, Intermediate Obedience prerequisite – or Instructor’s approval) This 8 week course will introduce your dog to all of the agility equipment; Dog Walk, A-Frame, Tunnels, Chutes, Table, Teeter and Jumps. Attention exercises will be taught.

Intermediate/Advanced Agility (ages 6 months or older. Beginner Agility prerequisite – or Instructor’s approval) Ongoing classes at all levels of agility. Call for more information.

Conformation
Conformation (for all ages) Conformation training is specifically for show dogs. The word “conformation” in this sense, means the showing of dogs that conform to the standard of their breed set forth by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Conformation training is for purebred dogs of all ages. The training is focused on the persons handling and presentation of their dogs breed characteristics. The time in class and in the ring are also very beneficial socialization times.
